Rainbow Fish - Melanotaenia Trifasciata

Melanotaenia trifasciata display deep red fins and a dark black band (which sometimes shimmers with blue hues) that runs horizontally across the fish’s lateral line. Melanotaenia literally means “black“ and “band“. There is also a violet to blue irridescence throughout the rest of the body. The males has darker, more vibrant coloring and are deeper bodied than the females. During mating or flaring behavior, the males will display prominent strips of flourescent blue, purple, or white along the tops of their heads and backs.
